New Applicants to the SOL School of Occult Science- Welcome
Minimize

Welcome to the Servants of the Light (SOL) new applicants page.  We're glad that you are seriously interested in the real art and science of Magic. This page will guide you in the online application process for potential new members.

If you've studied this, and possibly other SOL sites, you will be familiar with the goal of SOL, which is to provide authentic and trusted access to the Western Mystery Tradition.  It has done this successfully for thousands of students in over 23 countries around the world.

To join the SOL School as a student is to embark on an exciting journey of personal discovery and empowerment.  This should not be interpreted as empowerment for personal gain.  SOL has a long-standing moral tradition and shuns the idea of fast-won magical power for personal advantage.  This is not to say that you shouldn't set goals that benefit you; simply that such goals should also benefit others as part of an overall plan for your life.

SOL offers several Degrees of Study.  The first of these consists of six lessons grouped into a Foundation Course.  This is aimed at people starting magical study for the first time, but, because of its excellent reputation as an orientation tool, experienced students from other schools often ask for their studies to begin in this way.  Having completed the SOL Foundation Course (or you may be approved to by-pass it), you will begin the SOL First Degree Course.  This was written by SOL's founder, the eminent author and magician, W. Ernest Butler, and comprises forty lessons, to be studied at the rate of one per month, with extensive work required to put the theory into practice.  You will be required to work daily on the application of your studies and to keep a formal diary of your progress and, sometimes, failures.  We all fail from time to time, and eventually, life teaches us that failure holds just as much learning as success.

Each lesson costs £9.95 (sterling).  In the new SOL online world, you can only pay for lessons using a PayPal account.  SOL is run mainly by volunteers, graduated students who want to keep it alive and thriving, so our income is small.  We depend on this new online system to keep our costs down so that we can stay true to our promise to continue to deliver Ernest Butler's vision of an easy access and low cost course.  Using PayPal in this way helps us achieve this.  Please note that the earlier manual systems are no longer available and online access to lessons is now our only method of delivery.

If our reputation has resulted in you wanting to join us, then we're very pleased to welcome you into the admissions process. The UK site is the home of the global administration systems for SOL and the first step is to register your application.

There are several stages to this.

Please carry out the following:

1. Site Guide.  Click the following (or use the Home page reference in the left panel) for the PDF Site Guide. Download and study this, then return to the Home page and Register. Note: This is only the first stage of Registration whose purpose is to enable you to log on to the website, from which all your future SOL Lessons will be downloaded. Later in the process, if accepted into the SOL School, you will be directed back to fill out your Personal Profile.

2. Acknowledgement.  When your Registration has been acknowledged by email, return to the Home page and pull down the Join menu from the main overhead menu bar. We would like you to fill in two online documents you will find there: the first is named Join - Part 1, Enrol, the second, Join - Part 2, Examination. Don't be put off by the wording; "examination", it simply means telling us about what you've studied in the past so that we can get the right start-point for your studies. When you've filled in both these forms, your application will be considered by the SOL ARC Council and we will acknowledge to you that this is taking place. Please read this carefully as many people send in just one of the two forms and delay their applications.

3. Admission - We don't take everyone who applies. Sometimes there are factors that indicate that magical studies would be detrimental to a person's wellbeing at this point in their lives. We have to consider this very carefully before enrolling new students. If we can't admit you, we'll discuss the reasons and offer to help with appropriate alternatives.

4. Acceptance.  If you are admitted, you will be allocated a personal Supervisor for your studies. If we can arrange this to be someone in your local geography, we will. All our Supervisors are voluntary workers; people who were new students themselves not too long ago, and know just how you are feeling. In general, SOL is run by volunteers, we are a not-for-profit organisation, run from mutual goodwill, love and respect for the efforts of others. Because the allocation of a Supervisor is such an individual process it can take some time. You may need to wait several months before we can place you with a suitable Supervisor, so please don't apply if this wait will affect your enthusiasm.

5. Good luck with your application. If you're ready, go to the Home page, click on Register in the top right, and you can take the first step. When your logon is confirmed by email, go back to the electronic application forms referenced above.
