My Meeting with Anna Branche, by Dolores Ashcroft-Nowicki
Minimize

More than twenty five years ago I was asked to give a series of lectures at the Open Centre in New York City. Although I had visited the city before this was the first time I had lectured there and was feeling nervous. There was a queue of people outside the door of the lecture room paying their entrance fee and as I entered I was asked for $30 which I handed over thinking this was for refreshments. I then made my way to the podium and got out my papers as the room filled up. A flustered official came up and handed me back my $30 and apologised for not recognising that I was the Speaker. We had a laugh over it and I made ready to begin.

I cannot remember now what the lecture was about but I do remember that halfway through I stopped in mid-sentence as I caught the eye of a lady sitting in the front row and almost lost the thread of my lecture. An African-American of great bearing and dignity, she was every inch an  ‘Inkosikazi’  she smiled and I felt an ancient link re-forming between us.

Somehow I got through the lecture and after answering questions I finally made my way to her. That was my first meeting with Anna Branche, later to become the Spiritual Teacher Shakmah Windrum, the Founder of the SEED Sanctuary and my spiritual sister.

The love that had been between us many lives ago was now stronger than ever. As the years went by I became a frequent visitor to her home and was welcomed into her School. My family was her family and hers became mine. We often lectured together either in Philadelphia or in Carolina.  Once, in a never to be forgotten workshop in London we worked a ritual for over 200 people.

We shared good times and bad and helped each other over trials and tribulations. I was always welcomed with love and warmth. Lyratah, Adananah, Avizan, and Mishanavah, Azterrah, Montorrah and Azimandah, and many many others became my brothers and sisters. We cried together over the loss of Shankomesh and rejoiced over the birth of Christopher and Cassidy. Wilma, Mark, Sidney and Alex became as much my children as hers and still are.

We shared our knowledge and our power and as the years went by we grew even closer. When her health began to fail she kept going with courage, determination and an inner grace that gave her a Spiritual Presence we all recognised.

I was with her a few days before she ascended and was given the grace to assist her loose her Spiritual Guide and pass it over to Lyratah her chosen successor.

She hated saying Goodbye, so the following morning I went to her bedside and said simply…” I’m just going out for a while dear, I’ll see you when I return.”  She smiled and closed her eyes again.

I lost a sister and a friend, a fellow teacher and a shoulder to lean on. Her like will not come again but , if the Lords of Light are kind, in another lifetime I will look up and see her across a room full of people and it will all begin again.
